OUR TEAM
Laboratory Personnel

Our team in the lab consists of four technicians, all trained in the skill of tissue culture. We have capacity for four propagators plus a dedicated initiator. The technicians work on a rotational basis so that they take turns to keep up production with other tasks such as media preparation, sterilising and routine cleaning which is a skill in itself in a clean-room. We also have a “chief cook” who is responsible for mixing all the media to perfection. She also coordinates the daily routine around the laboratory and ensures everything required for production is ready. The last member of the team is our dedicated protocol developer and initiator and general plant culture expert to make sure all our processes in vitro are functioning as they should to obtain the ultimate goal: maximum production of healthy, strong and true to type plants. The laboratory technicians are also trained in data capturing on our computer program, to help us keep record of what is being produced, and keep a close check on performance of cultivars to make future production planning possible. All this enables us to produce 500 000 – 600 000 plants a year, depending on species and cultivar, and we intend to keep on growing…

Greenhouse Personnel

We have four permanent staff members working with the plants ex vitro and in vivo in both the greenhouses and shadehouses to continue production of the plants from the laboratory as well as the other propagation work that we do. They are also trained in plant health management, production systems and record keeping, so that we can track and chase specific cultivars outside of the laboratory and plan our production accordingly. Most of our production requires a bit of extra special TLC as we deal with high value plants, and that is what our staff must be able to provide to ensure maximum harvests of top quality produce. We also get in our regular harvesters at the end of the growth cycles – they are our “gemstone miners” here at Emerald Green. They understand the value of careful harvesting and post harvesting treatments and grading.
