Emerald Green Horticulture is a young, dynamic South African company, specializing in plant propagation and production, based on sound business management principles and the effective application of technical and scientific knowledge of plant production and development. We believe that there is much scope to expand the South African horticultural industry and hope to contribute to the growth of this sector by producing quality plant material for commercial growers at locally acceptable rates, as well as promoting South African indigenous flowers through development and research. Our intention is to have a high, positive impact on the local community, through the advancement of associated skills and mentoring of and amongst employees, while having a low ecological impact by implementing sensible environmental management principles - thus having an overall sustainable business
We are a green industries company based in Cullinan, 40 km north east of Pretoria. We specialize in the micro-propagation (tissue culture) and production of high value young plants to supply the grower’s market with strong starter material. Intensive production systems are utilized to ensure predictable yields of superior quality produce, reducing the risk normally associated with crop production significantly. This includes plant production under greenhouse structures enabling climatic control for year-round supply and production, as well as the control and reduction of disease occurrence; optimising irrigation and fertilisation regimes to obtain excellent growth and health of plants; micro-propagation systems to maximise the multiplication of plant material in a disease free environment (cleanroom).
These production systems require a high level of skilled staff, and an integral part of the business is skills development and training of employees. As we are still a fast growing company, programs are continuously being developed to facilitate training in different aspects of the business, such as cleanroom maintenance, micro-propagation procedures and greenhouse management.
As plants are produced in isolated areas, we can limit ecological impact by reducing run-off and spread of pollutants (such as excess fertiliser and pesticides) and by implementing integrated pest management programs. By continuous monitoring of all aspects of production, waste of natural resources (such as water and fuel for heating requirements) can be kept to a minimum.

In any horticultural or plant production business, the supply of good quality (disease free, true-to-type and high yielding) plant material is of essence. The ultimate way to produce such plant material is through the micro-propagation process.
Currently, Zantedeschia deciduous species and its hybrids are being produced mainly through micro-propagation (also known as coloured arum or calla lilies, or “varkore”).
We also propagate plants on request from growers or breeders - if you have a specific plant or your own plant material that you would like for us to propagate feel free to contact us!
